No complicated rules. No special skills. Just you, your cacao and a moment to slow down.

01 / Discover

What is ceremonial cacao?

Ceremonial cacao is made from whole cacao beans, carefully fermented, dried, roasted and ground into a rich paste.

Unlike conventional cocoa powder, which has much of its natural cacao butter removed, whole cacao retains its naturally occurring fats and distinctive flavour.

Cacao has a rich cultural history in Central America, where it has been enjoyed as a drink and used in social and ceremonial traditions for centuries.

Today, it's enjoyed as a delicious drink, a mindful daily ritual or simply an opportunity to slow down.

02 / Your serving

How much cacao should I use?

Everyone's cacao journey is different. If you're just starting, begin gently and discover what suits you.

10–15g

Gentle Introduction

A lovely starting point for your first experience.

15–20g

Everyday Cup

A rich and satisfying serving for regular enjoyment.

20–25g

Richer Experience

For those who enjoy a stronger cacao flavour.

38g+

Ceremonial Dose

A larger serving sometimes used in cacao ceremonies and intentional rituals. Best approached gradually once you understand your tolerance.

These are suggested serving sizes, not prescribed doses. Cacao naturally contains theobromine and caffeine. Larger servings may cause unwanted effects, including palpitations, nausea or difficulty sleeping. Start small and consider your sensitivity to stimulants. Seek medical advice if pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or managing a relevant health condition.

How to make your first cup

You'll need 15–20g of cacao, 150–200ml of hot water or milk, a whisk and your favourite cup.

STEP 01

Carefully shave or chop your cacao block into small pieces to help it melt smoothly.

STEP 02

Warm your liquid

Heat water or your favourite milk until hot but not boiling. Around 65–75°C works well.

STEP 03

Melt and whisk

Add your cacao and whisk gently until completely melted and beautifully smooth.

Enjoy it pure, or add cinnamon, vanilla, honey or your preferred sweetener.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drink ceremonial cacao every day?

Many people enjoy cacao regularly. Begin with a modest serving, consider your total caffeine intake and pay attention to how your body responds.

Do I need to add milk?

Not at all. Water allows the natural cacao flavour to shine, while milk or plant-based alternatives create a creamier drink.

Is ceremonial cacao bitter?

Pure cacao has a natural bitterness, but you may also discover fruity, earthy, nutty or gently sweet flavour notes.

Does cacao contain caffeine?

Yes. Cacao contains caffeine and theobromine. The amounts vary between cacao products and serving sizes.

What is a ceremonial dose of cacao?

Some modern cacao ceremonies use approximately 38g or more of whole cacao. This is a customary serving description rather than a scientifically established dose or safety threshold. Larger amounts are not necessary for a meaningful ritual, and beginners should start with smaller servings.

How should I store my cacao?

Keep it tightly wrapped or sealed in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.

Do I have to use cacao ceremonially?

Absolutely not. Enjoy it however you wish, whether that's a mindful ritual, a morning drink or simply because you love good cacao.
